Proven Success
with all kinds of learners

For the last 25 years, Eli Williams has been effectively teaching Latin to all types of learners.

Eli spent the first 5 years of his career teaching middle school Latin at an independent school and then an urban charter school.  He then spent the last 10 years teaching at Brookline High School, a surburan public school outside of Boston.

After 25 years of teaching and tutoring, he has had the opportunity to work with a variety of learners.  He has helped 6th graders failing Latin 1 and worked with AP Latin students hoping to get a 5 on the AP exam and each student has found success.

Additionally, Eli has worked with students with a variety of learning profiles.  To help each student find success, Eli develops and tailors a learning plan that worked for that student.  As a result all of his students have improved, many dramatically.

A Different Approach:
Teaching Tailored to You

Latin can be hard, particularly when it is taught in a "one size fits all" way that prioritizes rote memorization.

Eli teaches differently. Rote, visual memorization works for a few, but most students need to be taught in ways that fits how they actually learn and their strengths as a learner.

Every student learns in a different way. Eli works hard in the first session (it's free) to figure out how a student learns best and then builds a plan for each student that plays on that student's strengths.  Eli then constantly enlists the student's help to figure out what's working and what isn't.  Because of his experience with so many types of learners, Eli has effective strategies that support individual strengths.

Often Latin teachers force students to learn in a way that plays to their weaknesses as students- rote memorization, declension charts, etc...  Eli builds a plan based around what each student can do. He then shares strategies that fit a student's strengths and support them in their areas of struggle.

Latin can be FUN?
Connection and Engagement

The 2 most important aspects of learning are often neglected in a Latin classroom: teacher connection and fun.  Many Latin teachers are more concerned with the survival of the Latin language than connecting with the students sitting in the room.

Teaching is about learning and learning comes from individual connections with individual students and joy.   Eli teaches because he likes helping young people and likes to have fun. He remembers his initial struggles in Latin as a 13 year old, long before he went to Princeton and Harvard and became a teacher.   As a result, he works hard to establish a connection with each of his students.  Because Eli works so hard to build this rapport, students feel comfortable explaining what works and what doesn't work,  so that Eli can adjust accordingly.  More about Eli Williams

Additionally, learning is about joy and fun, and connecting with Latin.  As a result, in a tutoring session, Eli and his student might be singing, joking, dancing,  playing games,  telling stories in Latin and English,  sharing Roman anecdotes, etc.  The point is it can and should be fun and if it isn't fun for a student, the lesson can quickly and easily be adapted.
